Perhaps the wrong group, but I don't immediately
find one that discusses old paintings, so hopefully
someone here can point me in the right direction.
In Robert Campion's Annunciation,

Joseph is shown in the right panel of the triptych,
boring some holes. On the table beside him (and
another perhaps visible through the open window),
there is a 'mousetrap'. It is not immediately apparent,
at least to me, how this device worked.
Is anyone familiar with the old design? It doesn't seem
to invite the beastie to crawl in and be unable to escape,
nor do I see any spring-loaded contraption to crush
his little head.
